Spirits

My spirits are protective, benevolent beings inspiring joy, comfort, encouragement, and hope.

I create their bodies and faces from stoneware slabs, impressed with texture and designs. Once these are bisque fired, I rub the pieces with iron oxide and hand paint them with glaze.

I juxtapose these pieces and faces until a form emerges. I add embellishments I have collected from the forest and shoreline including cedar branches, driftwood and shells. I also add upcycled bits of jewelry (thank you, Scrap Exchange!).

You can find my work at Woman Craft Gifts in Chapel Hill, Spiral Studio in Hillsborough and Fusion Gallery in Durham.

You can also find us at many arts and crafts festivals. Please see the Upcoming Events page for details.

The doll is symbolic homunculi, little life. It is the symbol of what lies buried in humans that is numinous. It is a small and glowing facsimile of the original Self. Superficially, it is just a doll. But inversely, it represents a little piece of soul that carries all the knowledge of the larger soul-Self. In the doll is the voice, in diminutive, of old La Que Sabe...

Women Who Run With the Wolves

...In the doll is the voice, in diminutive, of old La Que Sabe, The One Who Knows...the psyche works even when we sleep, most especially when we sleep, even when we are not fully conscious of what we are enacting...

In this way the doll represents the inner spirit of us as women; the voice of inner reason, inner knowing, and inner consciousness.
